Looking for some good critical tech books? You’ve come to the right place!

One of the perks of hosting a podcast and writing this newsletter is that I get to read a lot of books about technology and the tech industry. Over on Bookshop, I put together recommendations in a wide range of categories, including everything from workers and transportation to history and classics of tech criticism.

I chose to use Bookshop because they make it easy and, well… it’s not Amazon! You’re under no obligation to buy there, but feel free to browse and hopefully something will catch your eye.

That list is designed to give you an overview if there’s a particular topic you’d like to know more about but haven’t previously explored. However, for paid subscribers, I also put together several lists a year to keep you informed on forthcoming books you might want to preorder.

These lists are much more current than the general lists I curate on Bookshop. You can find them here:

A critical tech reading list for summer 2025
I recently looked at the list of books I’ve read so far this year and was disappointed to find I’d only read eight. Eight! As someone who usually has a goal of reading a book a week, I’m well behind where I should be — in part because I was traveling so much the first half of the year.
A critical tech reading list for spring 2025
For the past couple weeks, I’ve been in New Zealand and there’s one book I keep hearing about: Sarah Wynn-Williams’ Careless People — because I’m talking to a lot of people about tech and, of course, she happens to be a New Zealander. But even without that fact, it’s a book I’m intrigued to read because of the controversy it’s stirred up and the mixed reactions I’ve seen to it. Certainly, a brutal recounting for Facebook’s leadership, but at the same time, is the narrator truly so innocent? I’m looking forward to forming my own opinions.
A critical tech reading list for early 2025
The first couple months of 2025 are absolutely stacked with great critical technology books. I sadly won’t be able to read them all, and probably already have more on my reading list than I’ll be able to get to. I’m sure there will be at least a few that speak to you and you decide to pick up!
A critical tech reading list for late 2024
There are only a few months left to 2024, but that’s still plenty of time to dig into some critical technology books. Admittedly, the next few months do seem a little slower than usual, but maybe that’s good for the books that are coming out. (I’m already seeing a bunch planned in the new year, but more about them when the time comes!)
A critical tech reading list for mid-2024
Looking for a critical tech read as we head into summer? Or a book to cozy up with as the temperatures drop for those of you in the Southern hemisphere? You’ve come to the right place.
A critical tech reading list for early 2024
I read quite a lot, and since I write this newsletter and make Tech Won’t Save Us, I’m always at least trying to keep up on what tech books are coming.
A critical tech reading list for the rest of 2023
There are so many books I’m excited to read in the coming months, so I figured it would be a nice perk for paid subscribers to put together a list of everything I’m hoping to check out.
